How to lock up properly

• Lock to something that can't be cut through or lifted over — check the top of the post or rail before you walk away.
• Fill the shackle. The less empty space inside the U, the less room a thief has to get a tool in. A long shackle gives you reach, so use it to capture more of the bike rather than leaving air.
• Capture the frame and the rear wheel where you can.
• Keep the lock off the ground with the keyhole facing down — it stops a thief bracing the lock against the pavement, and keeps grit out of the cylinder.
• Choose a well-lit spot with people passing.

Lost keys

Register your key number with Kryptonite's Key Safe programme when you buy. If you lose your keys, Kryptonite will send a replacement pair for a flat shipping charge rather than leaving you cutting the lock off your own bike.

Looking after it

Lubricate the cylinder a few times a year with a silicone, graphite or PTFE-based lubricant. Do not use WD-40. It is a solvent, not a lubricant — it strips the grease out of the cylinder and shortens the life of the lock.
